For this week’s Refashion Runway, the theme was copycat refashion and of course I really wanted to join the sew-along (you don’t compete in the Runway, you just sew along to the theme).
At first, I wasn’t sure what the heck I was going to do. Then I saw Amber’s amazing gingham + cherries outfit and was inspired.
I had this gingham dress that I had been holding on to for 10 YEARS. It hadn’t fit me in about 9 years. It was time to let go. When i figured I could make something out of the dress that I could actually wear, I got excited!
BEFORE – see, the dress didn’t even come close to zipping up.
AFTER – a much better skirt with a cute tie on the side:
Basically I cut the bodice of the original dress off and created a waist band and enough sash to tie a bow on the side. It’s not a great refashion because it did end up a little bit like franken-skirt, but I love bows + gingham so much that I didn’t mind;)
Not quite as gorgeous and ethereal as Amber’s version but I think I captured the general spirit of it.
What do you think of my gingham dress to skirt copycat refashion?

It seems that in every post, I’m complaining about the unbearable heat in NC. This one is no different. See how sweaty I am?
Anyway, I wanted to show off my new Melissa + Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Lady Dragon pumps. I recently sold some stuff on ebay so I had money in my PayPal account and when these shoes went on sale, I could NOT resist. They are so very Queen of Hearts and so unique. I’m trying to figure out more ways to wear them.

I actually had another blog post in mind for today but I am just too excited not to blog about my foray into sewing clothes. I am a sewing beginner for sure, so it came to everyone’s surprise (especially me) how this turned out.
Background story: I bought this horrible muumuu type denim dress at Goodwill last October as part of a Halloween costume (‘Big Love’ was the theme and several female coworkers and I dressed as sister-wives and a male coworker dressed as our ‘husband’…yes, very un-PC). Anyway, I didn’t want to just donate it back to Goodwill thinking that I could reuse the dress somehow. Well, I recently saw THIS refashion and I was just smitten. The gears in my head started turning and I was inspired to take out that muumuu and start sewing.
Here’s what happened…behold the transformation!
-the refashioned dress front is actually the old dress’ back. You’ll notice 1 button if you look at the refashioned dress’ back and that’s left over from the front of the muumuu. Because of this, I had to cut out and sew up the side pockets because they were facing the wrong way.
-I didn’t sew in a zipper. The original waist was a little loose so I sewed in 2 strips of thick elastic inside the back of the refashioned dress; you’ll notice a gather in the back
-The original front pockets were sewn together to turn them into a bow! I turned the bow into a pin so it can be worn wherever!
-I used pre-made trim to sew across the sweetheart neckline. I was thinking of also trimming the bottom hem. Not sure yet.
-The halter straps were made from the original sleeves.
-Frumpy denim muumuu dress, thrifted $4.59
-Polka dot sash that I used as a belt and as a headband, thrifted $1
-Sole Society suede peeptoe pumps, Sole Society OLD
-Vintage yellow/white beaded necklace, ebay $5
-Bow pin made by me
-Sewing supplies $10
Total: not too shabby!
Yesterday I was in the mood for something easy and breezy. Nothing says easy than a flow-y chiffon blouse – with a summery floral print! One of my favorite ways to wear floral is with denim so pairing this blouse with a pair of skinny jeans was a no-brainer. And also I’m silly, so I took a picture while holding our pet gargoyle.
As for shoes, if you’re wondering (or not at all) why I haven’t been wearing heels lately it’s mainly because I have chronic lower back pain and it’s been worse these past few weeks. Plus the rain isn’t good for heels 🙂
OH and I wanted to tell you all that I have a refashion (taking a piece of clothing and changing it into something else) that I’m currently working on that I think is pretty darn sweet. If you have instagram, follow me to see this sneak-peak – @kittehluvs
Have a GREAT hump-day.
