Monthly Archives: January 2016

what i bought this month {january budget)

I can’t even believe that tomorrow is February first. January was a fun month. First there was new year’s, we’re all getting back to work after the holidays, then there was my birthday (I turned 31 and so far, it’s definitely better than 30), then we got a snow storm thing, and now the weather is getting warmer and it’s time to get ready for spring.

A few weeks ago, as you probably read on my blog, I had a mold incident that pushed me to do a serious clean-out of my main closet (don’t judge me, I live in an old house so I have to use multiple closets all around the house). I’m glad that I did, because I need more space (in general) and I needed some extra space for my new things.

Here’s what I got this month:
January 2016 budget - what I bought this month

  1. Brooks Brothers Supima cotton five-pocket jeans, $62 on sale (plus $15 for tailoring)
  2. Bill Murray xmas tee $2, thrifted (I can’t wait to wear this next christmas!)
  3. L.L.bean outdoors shirt $2, thrifted
  4. Banana Republic blue v-neck tee $1.50, thrifted
  5. Adidas cropped pants $2, thrifted
  6. Cats sleep tee $2.50, thrifted
  7. Hobo bag – $24, Clothes mentor (minus a few things that I sold)
  8. Hobo bag – $40, Consignment store (minus a discount and a credit from selling stuff)
  9. Adidas Supergirl Tukana jacket (gift from hubby)

Total = $151 … okay so a bit over my budget but not too bad considering it was my birthday month and all.

Oh and by the way, I’ve decided to nix the monthly budget of $100 in favor of a quarterly budget of $375. Which means I’ve got $224 left for the quarter.

Now it’s your turn – how did you do this month?

As always, I’m linking up with Franish.

lovely layers {a workwear wendesday outfit}

jennifer lopez fit-and-flare dress, f21 peter pan collar blouse, hue tights, cole haan boots
I absolutely love layer when the weather gets cooler. Cute shirts, sweaters, and jeans or dresses with shirts underneath, tights, and my favorite boots.

I take serious advantage of wearing layers while I can, because come spring and summer, it gets WAY too hot to wear more than one thin layer.

A little bit of menswear {workwear wednesday}

Okay, I’ll admit, this is not the most menswear-inspired outfit. In fact, it’s pretty darn feminine. I thought the button-up collar shirt was enough to create the look. I didn’t want to post it at first, because I was feeling kind of bummed that I didn’t have a better outfit to share. But I’m going to share it anyway, because even thought it’s not completely on-point, it’s still cute (or so I think, at least).

Here are some “better” menswear-inspired outfits that I’ve worn in the past:

A confession + what’s on my wishlist

This past weekend I completed a serious and much-needed clean-out of my closets and dressers. The reason as to why I did this now is something I need to confess: I had so many things crammed into my the tiny closet in my 1960’s ill-insulated ranch home that several of the garments grew mold. Yup, that’s right, my clothes grew mold! So let that be a warning to all of you – do not cram stuff into your closets! Let your clothes have some breathing.

This big clean-out got me thinking. I now know exactly what I have and what I need. And I’m making an official list of items that I actually need. That way, you (my friends and readers and fellow bloggers) can help keep me on track. Sorry to put so much pressure on you like that but I’m giving you permission to shame me for not keeping to my clothing budget.

Let’s start with tops. I now have a good amount of jeans, dresses, and skirts. What I don’t have a lot of are work-appropriate blouses, like these. I think I should be able to get a nice blouse for $50 or less.

I’ve always wondered about the Express Portofino blouses. I have friends that have them and they look great but I haven’t tried one on for myself.

I also could use a nice, comfortable pair of flats. I have a few plastic flats which are perfect for wearing in the rain but my black leather flats are not very comfortable and getting a bit old. I want something quality so I’m willing to save up for something in the $100 range. Here are some that I’ve had my eyes on:

Cole Haan Manhattan Bow Ballet Flats Black

What I DON’T NEED but have a problem controlling myself around: purses, boots, jackets, jewelry, hats, jeans, and dresses.

Now I need your help, friends! If you have suggestions for good work blouses (size XL) and good quality leather flats, please share the links below!

workwear wednesday in monochrome!

Hi friends! Today’s workwear wednesday theme is monochrome or all one color. You can take that so many ways but I kind of went the safe (and possibly slightly boring) way and wore all black. I really love wearing black though, and I’m doing as much of it as possible while it’s cold, because once summer comes around, it’ll be too hot.

Check out Justine’s blog for her take on monochrome.
