Monthly Archives: May 2016

may 2016 budget

Wow, I can’t believe it’s almost June already. I know I literally say this exact thing every month but it’s truly a shock how fast times goes by. Lately I’ve been obsessed with shopping ebay. I haven’t had the time or patience to do as much thrifting but I still have the thrift bug and with online marketplaces like ebay, thredup, etc. you can “thrift” (sort of?) without leaving your home.

Here’s what I got this month:May 2016 Budget

I quickly became obsessed with the Dansko Randa sandals when I saw it on a coworker. Even though I didn’t really need another sandal, I had to go for it and I’m glad I did. They’re super comfortable and add a bit of height without hurting my back.

Top L to R:
1) Runaway Moogfest t-shirt, local boutique, $25
2) Brooks Brothers tie-neck blouse, thrifted, $4
3) NYDJ sleeveless blouse in abstract print, ebay, $13
4) Misook open front black cardigan, ebay, $29
5) Dansko Randa sandals, ShoeBuy, on sale for $50

Total = $121

I had $275 left for the quarter last month so now I’ve got $154 left for June.

As always, I’m linking up with Franish.

P.S. happy Memorial Day.

pretty in prints {workwear wednesday}

I am absolutely head-over-heels obsessed with cute prints. Funny, cheeky, cute–the more unusual the better. And you probably noticed this if you’re following the blog 🙂 Here’s one of my more recent shirts with the cutest print – seahorses! I get complements on this blouse every time I wear it.

I tend to pair fun prints with a plain bottom, like jeans, but occasionally I love a good print mixing. Here, though, I’ve just got

blazing blazers {workwear wednesday}

Blazers aren’t always the most fun, but they’re undeniably chic, classic, and look great on everyone! **Please excuse these less-than-stellar photos – my regular camera’s battery died and I didn’t have time to wait so hubby took pictures with my phone.

For this Workwear Wednesday, I’ve recreated one of my favorite casual office outfit equations: blazer + tee + skinny/straight-leg jeans + flats = FABULOUS. This is just one simple way to style a blazer for work; there are so many options, including pairing a blazer unexpectedly with a skirt or even a dress.

One of my favorite details about this blazer is that it has a different collar than a usual blazer lapel. This blazer also has a tweed texture, leather accents, and a bit of flow-y chiffon fabric around the trim. I feel so chic wearing this structured blazer – it’s one of my favorite thrifted finds and looks good dressed up or down.

workhair wednesday {favorite work hair}

I confess. I’m one of those people that doesn’t want to spend 40 or more minutes each morning styling my hair. But I have curly hair, so I have few options for get-ready-in-10-minutes hairstyles. For those two reasons, I almost always wear my hair down for work. That means it’s naturally curly and (mostly) low maintenance.

Here’s an example of a hair style that I wore almost daily when I had long hair (I just got it cut recently). Natural curls with a side part (and maybe sometimes a small clip or bobby pin).

Here’s how I’ve been wearing my hair since my recent haircut. I’m still rocking the side part. One difference between my long and short hair is with short hair, I’ve been drying it using a diffuser, which creates more volume and tighter curls.

I’m also trying bangs again for the first time in years. I know curly bangs can be tricky, and I do struggle with mine. But I like them.

Every once in a while, I will wear my hair up to work. This is a rare occurrence, though, because my hair looks pretty weird styled up (ponytail or bun) unless I spend an hour making it a pretty up-do.

Even though I have super curly hair, until recently I felt that curly hair wasn’t “office chic” or sleek or business-y. Curly hair can be crazy, unruly, or even wild. It doesn’t like to be tamed and just wants to do its own thing. With a little bit of product and some know-how to tame frizz, I do think curly hair is office-appropriate and chic. It’s natural and beautiful and different, but it’s taken me a long time to love my curly hair. And I will admit, I do straighten it every once in a while.

What products do I use?
In case you’re wondering, I only shampoo once or twice a week because I have dry hair. I use conditioner almost daily. I also use leave-in conditioner almost daily. If I’m going to let my hair naturally air dry, I use Biolage Curl Defining Elixir Gel. It’s probably the best gel I’ve ever used and worth the price. If I’m going to diffuse my curls, I use the Biolage Curl Defining Elixir plus the Biolage Thermal-Active Setting Spray, then I diffuse.

What about you? How do you wear your hair to work? What styles do you think are best for more casual work settings or less casual offices?

april 2016 budget

It’s May already (can you believe it!) and time to admit to my purchases for the month of April. As you may know from a previous blog, I bought a few things from ModCloth. Nothing thrifted this month, but a few cute things for sure.

April 2016 Budget

1) Going, going swan skirt, ModCloth
2) Purr-suit of happiness tee, ModCloth
3) NYDJ Seahorse print sleeveless blouse, ebay {same shirt w/different prints}
4) Frye Melissa Wallet, Nordstrom Rack {larger version}
5) Emily McDowell Dapper Cat enamel pin, local boutique {find it here}

Let’s talk money.
The ModCloth order (after coupon code and gift card) was $55

TOTAL = exactly $100 🙂 Not too bad.

Which means I have $275 left for the quarter.

Now it’s your turn to spill the beans…how did YOU do this month?
