workhair wednesday {favorite work hair}

I confess. I’m one of those people that doesn’t want to spend 40 or more minutes each morning styling my hair. But I have curly hair, so I have few options for get-ready-in-10-minutes hairstyles. For those two reasons, I almost always wear my hair down for work. That means it’s naturally curly and (mostly) low maintenance.

Here’s an example of a hair style that I wore almost daily when I had long hair (I just got it cut recently). Natural curls with a side part (and maybe sometimes a small clip or bobby pin).

Here’s how I’ve been wearing my hair since my recent haircut. I’m still rocking the side part. One difference between my long and short hair is with short hair, I’ve been drying it using a diffuser, which creates more volume and tighter curls.

I’m also trying bangs again for the first time in years. I know curly bangs can be tricky, and I do struggle with mine. But I like them.

Every once in a while, I will wear my hair up to work. This is a rare occurrence, though, because my hair looks pretty weird styled up (ponytail or bun) unless I spend an hour making it a pretty up-do.

Even though I have super curly hair, until recently I felt that curly hair wasn’t “office chic” or sleek or business-y. Curly hair can be crazy, unruly, or even wild. It doesn’t like to be tamed and just wants to do its own thing. With a little bit of product and some know-how to tame frizz, I do think curly hair is office-appropriate and chic. It’s natural and beautiful and different, but it’s taken me a long time to love my curly hair. And I will admit, I do straighten it every once in a while.

What products do I use?
In case you’re wondering, I only shampoo once or twice a week because I have dry hair. I use conditioner almost daily. I also use leave-in conditioner almost daily. If I’m going to let my hair naturally air dry, I use Biolage Curl Defining Elixir Gel. It’s probably the best gel I’ve ever used and worth the price. If I’m going to diffuse my curls, I use the Biolage Curl Defining Elixir plus the Biolage Thermal-Active Setting Spray, then I diffuse.

What about you? How do you wear your hair to work? What styles do you think are best for more casual work settings or less casual offices?

  1. I looooove your curls!! As I told Justine, I used to be totally envious of girls with curly hair (both my sister have curly hair) because mine was always so straight and flat. Since discovering my love for the pixie cut, I do love my hair now, but every once in a while, I still long for crazy awesome Merida curls!! Haha anyway, love your hair and you are totally rocking those natural curly locks! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Kristi! I guess everyone wants what they can’t have, because I’ve always wanted straight hair. I love your pixie hair but i can’t have hair that short because of the curls and every once in a while I get bummed. Hair’s funny like that.

  2. Rock those curls, girl! I love your hair long and short like it is now and the bangs are too cute. You’re right, bangs with curly hair are tricky but I like them on you! I think the perception that curly hair is less professional still exists, but you’re right- if it’s under control and with the right products, it’s just as professional as straight hair.

    I still have that Biolage gel on my list of products to try. I remember you recommended it to me a few years ago! What kind of leave-in conditioner do you use?

  3. I am so lazy with my hair. I literally turn my head upside down and blow dry the shit out of it or I pull it into a ponytail or messy bun. It’s been a lot easier since I shaved the back of my head. My hair is so thick that it can be unmanageable but with less of it things are easier.
