workwear wednesday – cardi party

A cardigan is one of the easiest and more effortless ways to class-up a dress or top to make it office appropriate. Plus, if you’re anything like me, you work in an office that’s freezing cold during the summer, so it’s 60 degrees indoors and 95 degrees outside.

Because of an insanely busy week, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite outfits that feature cardigans + summer wear. It looks like I like pairing cardigans with dresses or skirts ūüôā

Do you like wearing cardigans during warmer months? How do you style your cardigans for the office?

And of course, don’t forget to check out the lovely Justine and see how she wore her summer cardigan.

happy national thrift shop day! {workwear wednesday}

In honor of national thrift store day, Justine and I are sharing a thrifted Workwear Wednesday outfit.

Since it’s still as hot as Hades in North Carolina, yet the air conditioning at work is always set to “frostbite,” I decided to go with some basic layering (plus polka dots, because polka dots). Plus I was in the mood for some serious pattern-mixing. Why not?

5 reasons to shop local

I’m sure I’m not the only one to espouse the benefits of shopping local. I’ve noticed that recently I prefer shopping locally at a store (and even thrifting!) than buying items online, even though I know sometimes it’s necessary. Here are my 5 reasons why I think you should shop local:

  1. Your money goes to support a local family instead of a corporation. That family uses the money from their store to take care of their kids, support the local community, and grow their business.
  2. You get to see and touch the items before you buy. For me, I have a hard time fitting in clothes and/or shoes unless I already know the cut or the brand. At a local boutique, you can try out new brands, styles, and cuts without having to deal with mailing back returns. You can use all your senses from sight to smell to pick a favorite piece to take home (think luscious leather bag!).
  3. You get personal attention. If you need help picking out that perfect gift for Mom, stopping by a local boutique is a good way to find something with the help of an expert. They’ll spend the time to¬†help you find what you’re looking for.
  4. You might make new friends. I know this sounds a bit unusual, but take it from my personal experience that when you frequent a small local shop, you tend to see the same folks there and eventually you get to know each other. You might even make a few new friends!
  5. You might find a trendy¬†surprise!¬†Local boutiques often get unusual, handmade, vintage, or hard-to-find pieces. So if you’re looking for that trendy yet one-of-a-kind of piece of jewelry, purse, or dress, check out your¬†local boutique!

I’ve hopefully convinced you that shopping local is the best. Now let me introduce y’all to a great local shop that I had the pleasure of visiting last night. Peachy Keen¬†{yes you can shop online!} is a trendy local boutique in Cary, North Carolina that shares a space with an amazing fine jewelry consignment shop, Joint Venture Jewelry. ¬†I’ve sort of known the lovely family that owns the shop for a while, as they sold my hubby and I my gorgeous engagement ring back in 2008. So when I was invited to a VIP event at Peachy Keen, I was excited to check out the new space (they had moved a few years back).

Peachy Keen has a lovely selection of Liebeskind Berlin bags, lovely clothes (even Johnny Was), jeans, shoes, and jewelry. I had no idea that I’d be coming home with two pairs of Melissa shoes for myself and a lovely Hobo International wallet for my mom’s birthday–all on sale.

favorite work skirt {workwear wednesday}

Today, Justine and I are sharing our favorite work skirts. It may not be a conventional work skirt, but this Going, Going Swan Skirt from ModCloth is so adorable! And every time I wear it, I seem to get lots of complements, so that encourages me to wear it more :).

Here I paired this adorable skirt with a simpler pink shell blouse and my new favorite Melissa jelly flats. I figured since the swan print on the skirt is attention-grabbing, I’d tone down the other pieces and go for the print + solid colors combination.

july 2016 budget (and a bit about june, too)

As always, I’m going to begin my budget post by saying wow, another month gone and boy, does time fly fast. I’m also going to admit that I missed posting my June budget and therefore I’m going to include a little bit about that later in the post.

July was a busy month for me. The only shopping I did was when we were on vacation in Toronto. That’s why the budget kind of went out the window =/. Shopping while on vacation is fun until you get home and add all your receipts up, after which you¬†weep for your bank account and consider getting a second job.

Here’s what I bought this month:
Henkaa Ivy Black Dress Henkaa Hana Chiffon Overlay in Dove Grey Toronto Blue Jays Hats

  1. Henkaa Ivy Convertible Dress [black color, maxi length]
  2. Henkaa Hana Chiffon Overlay [dove grey, maxi length] to wear over my various Henkaa dresses.

=Both for about $128 after sale

  1. New Era Toronto Blue Jays Visor – $25
  2. New Era Toronto Blue Jays hat – $25

Total = $178

Not great. But, I’ll try to be better in August because y’all…June was even worse. Much much worse.

Here’s a breakdown of June. I’m a little ashamed to share this, y’all. And I’m not including a picture of all the things because I’m lazy.
